The amount of grains per gallon (gpg) you select should be determined by usage, the number of people in your household and how hard your water is. The harder your water, the higher the grain capacity that’s needed to handle the additional minerals.
The EP31 is designed to meet the needs of most homes with 1 to 4 people with water that’s slightly hard to very hard (3-14 gpg). The EP41 is meant to accommodate larger households with hard to extremely hard water (8-15+ gpg). Choosing the correct capacity water softener will mean having enough soft water for all your family’s needs while also keeping your system from regenerating more than necessary.
Grains of water hardness, measured as grains per gallon (gpg), refers to the maximum amount of hard water minerals such calcium and magnesium that a water softener can remove from your water supply before needing regeneration.
A water softener with a grain capacity of approximately 32,000 is recommended for most smaller households with average water use and slightly hard to very hard water (3-14 gpg).
If your household is on the smaller side (1-4 people), there’s no reason you shouldn’t go with the EP31. It’s best to avoid a higher grain capacity than what’s needed because larger softeners use more salt and water, meaning they cost more money to maintain.
If you are unsure which size is best, or if you think you are between sizes, it may be good to go with a system that has higher grains per gallon capacity, especially if you host friends and family often.
This will vary, based on usage and water hardness, but you can expect a 31,000 grain water softener to regenerate every 1-2 weeks. For most homes, regeneration will need to occur about once a week, but the harder your water the more likely you are to need regeneration sooner.
